Understanding individual words, but getting lost in a simple dialog - a familiar situation for many beginners. This is what Elementary (A1) level looks like in practice. This is the stage when English is just beginning to turn from a set of words into a working tool for communication. Basic grammatical structures, pronunciation, and listening skills are laid down here. Mistakes at this level are natural, but it is important to understand what knowledge is considered normal for A1. In this article we will discuss in detail what is included in the Elementary level and what results can be expected after mastering it.

What is the Elementary level in English

Elementary (A1) is the elementary level of English according to the CEFR scale. It shows that a person is just beginning to use the language for communication and can understand and construct the simplest phrases.

At the A1 level, a student can introduce himself/herself, talk about himself/herself, ask basic questions, understand simple speech at a slow pace and read short texts. It is not about free communication, but about the minimum practical set for everyday situations: acquaintance, shopping, traveling, simple dialogues.

It is important to realize that A1 is a foundation. If you don't work on basic grammar, pronunciation and understanding of sentence structure at this stage, you will find it much more difficult to learn further.

At BeBest, Elementary level learning is built around practice, not memorizing rules. Students start speaking from the first lessons, gradually mastering lively phrases and dialogues. This approach helps students overcome language barriers faster and move confidently to the next level. If it is important not just to “know” but to really use English, it is worth starting from the right base.
The Elementary (A1) level means that a person has already mastered the basics of English and can use it for the simplest everyday tasks. This is the stage at which the language ceases to be a set of individual words and begins to function as a tool for basic communication.
A student at A1 level is not yet capable of sustaining long dialogues or understanding rapid speech, but he or she can already engage in simple interactions with others. For example, explaining who he/she is, where he/she comes from, what he/she does, asking standard questions and understanding typical answers. Such skills are especially important for traveling, working in an international environment and further study.

It is also at this level that a basic understanding of the structure of the English language is developed. You begin to recognize the order of words in a sentence, understand the difference between affirmation, question and negation, and use the most common verbs and pronouns. This sets the stage for moving on to more complex tenses and constructions at the next levels.

In practice, a person at Elementary (A1) level will usually be able to:
  • Introduce themselves, say goodbye, thank you, and use other basic courtesy formulas;
  • Ask and understand simple questions about personal information (name, age, country, job, address);
  • Talk about themselves, their family, occupation and daily routine in short sentences;
  • Understand simple speech when spoken slowly and without complex expressions;
  • Read short texts such as announcements, menus, schedules, and e-mail messages;
  • Complete questionnaires and forms with personal information;
  • Use basic grammatical constructions: to be, have/has, can, Present Simple;
  • Orient themselves in standard everyday situations: shopping, ordering food, taking transportation, checking into a hotel.

Vocabulary at A1 level usually includes several hundred of the most common words and expressions related to everyday life. This is enough to express basic needs and understand the interlocutor in simple situations, but not enough to discuss abstract topics or professional issues.

It is important to realize that errors in pronunciation and grammar are acceptable at the Elementary level. The key indicator is not accuracy, but the ability to convey the main idea and understand the interlocutor, even with pauses and simplified formulations.

At BeBest, the A1 level program is designed so that students do not get stuck on theory. From the very first lessons they learn to speak, listen and use the language in real situations. This approach helps to consolidate the base and move on to the next level without stress.

What a person with Elementary (A1) level should know

Learning at Elementary (A1) level is organized around everyday situations that people encounter most often. The goal of this stage is not to overload with theory, but to learn how to use the language in real life: to ask a question, to understand the answer, to explain a simple thought.

Topics are selected so that the student can immediately apply new words and constructions in speech and gradually expand his or her vocabulary. Usually the A1 level program covers the following areas:

Acquaintance and personal information (name, age, country, profession);
  • Family and friends;
  • Daily activities and routines;
  • Home and where to live;
  • Shopping and eating;
  • Work and school;
  • Transportation and travel;
  • Time, dates, weather;
  • Hobbies and free time.

Each topic is accompanied by basic vocabulary and simple grammatical constructions, which are immediately practiced in dialogues and exercises. For example, when studying the topic “shopping”, students learn to ask the price, order goods and understand the seller's answers, and when studying the topic “work” - to talk about their position and schedule. This approach allows students at the A1 level not just to memorize words, but to form a steady habit of using English in typical life situations.

What topics are studied in the program for Elementary students

What can a student with A1 level of English know?

The Elementary (A1) level builds the basic language skills that allow you to begin using English in everyday life. These skills are still limited, but they provide the foundation for further development.
A student at A1 level is able to read short, simple texts consisting of familiar words and basic structures. This may include signs, menus, timetables, announcements, messenger messages and simple letters. Comprehension is most often based on keyword and context recognition rather than precise grammar analysis.

At this stage, a person can grasp the main idea of a text even if he or she does not understand every word. This is important for orientation in everyday situations: to find the right exit, to understand the time of departure of transportation or the terms of purchase.

Reading

Listening comprehension at A1 level is possible with a slow pace and clear pronunciation. A person can grasp familiar words, simple phrases and standard questions related to everyday topics.

This is sufficient for basic communication in a store, café, transportation or at the reception desk. However, long dialogs, fast pace of speech and unfamiliar accent still create serious difficulties, so the student often interrupts or asks to repeat information.

Listening

Writing

Writing at the Elementary level is limited to short sentences and simple messages. The student is able to write his/her name, address, fill out a form, and compose a short letter or message about himself/herself, his/her work, or plans for the day.

The focus is on correct word order and use of basic verb forms. Errors in spelling and grammar are allowed, but the meaning of the text usually remains clear to the interlocutor.
Speaking at A1 level is simple phrases and short answers, often with pauses and word searches. A person may say hello, introduce themselves, ask a basic question, make an order or explain a basic need. Speech is not yet fluent, but already allows participation in minimal dialog. The main task of this stage is to learn not to be afraid to speak and to use even a limited vocabulary for communication.

At BeBest we pay special attention to the development of speaking skills already at the A1 level. Classes are organized in such a way that the student regularly speaks, even using simple vocabulary. This helps you get used to the sound of English speech and eliminate the fear of making mistakes.

Speaking

The A1 vocabulary includes several hundred of the most common words related to everyday life: family, work, food, shopping, transportation, time, weather. These words are most often used in stable expressions and typical phrases.

The student begins to recognize familiar words in speech and texts, which gradually increases confidence when communicating. However, this vocabulary is not yet sufficient for discussing abstract topics or professional issues.

Grammar

Grammar at the Elementary level covers only the basic constructions needed to construct simple sentences. Students learn the present simple tense, forms of the verb to be, constructions with have/has, the modal verb can, and the formation of questions and negations.

This knowledge allows them to express facts, needs, and simple actions in the present tense. More complex tenses and structures begin to be learned at the next levels.
It is realistic for almost anyone, regardless of age or previous language learning experience, to reach Elementary (A1) level. It is a basic level that does not require deep knowledge of grammar or a large vocabulary, but it does require regular practice and a systematic approach.

The speed of learning depends on several factors: the intensity of lessons, the format of learning (self-study or with a teacher), and whether the student has the opportunity to practice the language outside of lessons. With regular lessons, progress is noticeable in the first few weeks: understanding of simple phrases appears, a basic vocabulary is formed, and speaking becomes easier.

The average timeframe is as follows:

Is it realistic to learn English to A1 level and how long does it take?

It is important to keep in mind that the A1 level is only the beginning. It provides the ability to navigate in simple situations, but does not provide confident communication. Therefore, after mastering it, it is recommended to move straight to A2 level to consolidate skills and expand your ability to use the language.

At BeBest, students can take Elementary (A1) at their own pace: from a relaxed format for busy people to intensive programs with fast results. Teachers help you build a clear learning system and immediately put the language into practice. This approach allows you not to stretch the basic level for months without real progress and to move more quickly to confident communication in English.
