Proficiency (C2) is the highest level of English according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). In this scale, the levels go from A1 to C2, and it is C2 that means almost complete language proficiency.
To summarize, the English C2 level is the ability to:
- Understand all spoken and written language, including complex academic and professional texts;
- Speak fluently, accurately and without word choice;
- Write structured texts of any type: reports, articles, analytical materials, business documentation;
- Use the language in work, study and official communication without adaptations and simplifications.
Important: C2 is not a native speaker level, but as close to it as possible in terms of functionality.
In practice, the Proficiency level is used:
- When enrolling in foreign universities (Master's degree, PhD);
- To work in international companies and organizations;
- For teaching English;
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) exams;
- For immigration and professional programs.
The wording “C2 proficiency” is often found in the requirements of employers and educational institutions and means that the candidate must be fluent in the language at the level of fluent professional use. C2 is the level at which a language ceases to be a skill and becomes a working tool.
