There is no need to memorize a list of fifty words in one evening. It is much easier to divide vocabulary into small groups: pets today, farm animals tomorrow, and wild animals later.
It is even more effective to use new words in short sentences straight away.
Instead of learning only perro, learn:
Tengo un perro. — I have a dog.
Instead of only elefante, learn:
El elefante es muy grande. — The elephant is very big.
You can describe photos, remember animals you have seen while travelling, or make up mini-stories. For example: El gato ve un pájaro, pero el pájaro vuela — “The cat sees a bird, but the bird flies away.”
One more simple rule: learn each noun together with its article — el perro, la vaca, la tortuga. That way, you will not have to remember the gender separately later.
Animal names are especially easy to remember through images. If you connect a word with a picture, a sound, and a simple sentence, it usually stays in memory much longer than if you only memorize it from a list.
