How to Ask “How Are You” in Spanish

When a person is just starting to learn the Spanish language, the phrase “How are you?” appears among the first ones. It is used literally everywhere: when meeting friends, in a store, while studying, or even in messaging. But many people are surprised when they find out that in Spanish there is no single universal option. Everything depends on the situation, communication, and even the country.

Formal phrases

If the conversation takes place with a stranger or in a more official setting, it is better to choose polite forms.
The phrase ¿Cómo está? is considered the most neutral one. It is calmly used:
  • at work;
  • during introductions;
  • in conversation with a teacher;
  • in an official situation.
In Spain people usually answer briefly. Most often you can hear:
  • Bien.
  • Muy bien.
  • Todo bien.
  • Gracias, bien.
Sometimes the question is asked simply out of politeness, without a long continuation of the conversation.

During informal communication

With friends and acquaintances, everything sounds much simpler and livelier. These are exactly the phrases that can most often be heard on the street or in TV series.
The most famous option is ¿Cómo estás? It is usually the first one beginners learn.
But in real life Spaniards very often simply say:
  • ¿Qué tal?
  • ¿Todo bien?
  • ¿Qué pasa?
The phrase ¿Qué tal? is especially popular. It is short, sounds natural, and fits almost any situation.
Sometimes in conversation you can hear even simpler variants:
  • ¿Todo?
  • ¿Cómo va?
  • ¿Qué hay?
Such forms are considered conversational and are more common among young people.

Other ways to ask the question

In different Spanish-speaking countries, familiar phrases may differ slightly. For example, in Spain and Latin America people may use completely different greeting options.
Here are a few more common phrases:
  • ¿Cómo andas?
  • ¿Qué cuentas?
  • ¿Cómo va todo?
  • ¿Qué haces?
¿Qué cuentas? literally translates as “What will you tell?”. Usually people ask this to acquaintances when they want to start an easy conversation.
The phrase ¿Cómo va todo? is closer in meaning to “How is everything going?”. It is often used in messaging or during a meeting after a long time.
It is important to understand one thing: in Spanish, the question about how things are going does not always mean genuine interest in the details of a person’s life. Very often it is simply part of a greeting.
Therefore, long answers are usually not expected. Most often it is enough to say:
  • Bien, ¿y tú?
  • Todo bien.
  • Más o menos.
  • Muy bien, gracias.
To get used to such phrases faster, it is useful to:
  • listen to live speech;
  • watch Spanish TV series;
  • repeat expressions aloud;
  • read dialogues;
  • use phrases in regular messaging.
Over time, such questions begin to be perceived automatically, and Spanish speech no longer seems so difficult to understand by ear.
