The use of dates in English has its own peculiarities, which often become the cause of errors in students. It is important to know not only how to write a date, but also what preposition to use and how to read it aloud correctly. For example, the word order in English dates is different from many other languages. Therefore, even a simple date phrase is sometimes questionable. In the exercises below you can practice using dates in English and test your knowledge in practice. Try the exercises and make sure you are confident in this topic.

Table of contents

In English, different prepositions are used to denote dates and times. The preposition on is used with specific dates and days of the week, for example, on Monday or on July 5. The preposition in is used with months, years, seasons and longer periods of time, such as in April, in 2022 or in summer. The preposition at is usually used with holidays and precise moments in time, such as at Christmas or at midnight. Read the sentences and choose the correct preposition on, in, or at.
